1. Get the game You need Unreal Tournament 3 (ideally Black Edition). The game is no longer officially sold – use your original DVD or digital copy. If you have the 2007 box in the basement, that's exactly your ticket.
Black Edition already includes patch 2.1 and the Titan Pack – in that case you can skip step 2.
2. Update the game If you have a clean or older Unreal Tournament 3 installation, download and install the required updates: v1.1 , v1.2 , v1.3 , v2.0 , v2.1 .
Additional content: Titan Pack , Bonus Pack .
Recommended order: updates v1.1 → v2.1, then the additional content, and finally the OpenSpy patch.
3. Fix the online services (OpenSpy) If online login or the server list doesn't work in Unreal Tournament 3 , you can use the community OpenSpy patch , which replaces the original defunct GameSpy service.
Download the OpenSpy patch: dinput8.dll Put the downloaded file into the folder containing UT3.exe , usually:...\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries\ Launch the game and create a new profile via Create Profile . Log in with this new OpenSpy profile. Note: your old GameSpy account may no longer work, so create a new OpenSpy profile. Use it only with a legal copy of the game; OpenSpy is a community solution, not an official Epic Games product.
4. Join UT3.sk Launch Unreal Tournament 3
Via console Open the console (F10 ) Type: open ut3.sk Set your name: setname your_name In-game Go to the Multiplayer menu Open the server browser Find UT3.sk in the list and join Show them who rules here!
5. Your first minutes on the server You'll face our adaptive bots – they adjust to your form, so you'll have fun whether you're a veteran or haven't played in years. Every match is logged: right after the game you'll find a complete breakdown, charts and heatmaps on the site.
History — details of all played matchesStories — written chronicles of the best gamesAchievements — badges worth collectingRecords — a hall of fame you can shoot your way intoTroubleshooting I can't see any servers in the game. What now? The GameSpy service UT3 used for server browsing shut down in 2014. The fix is the community OpenSpy patch (step 3 above) – a single dinput8.dll file in the Binaries folder. After logging in with a new OpenSpy profile the server list fills up again. Even without the patch you can join UT3.sk via the console with open ut3.sk.
Online login fails or spins forever. Your old GameSpy account no longer exists. After installing the OpenSpy patch, create a brand new profile in the game via Create Profile and log in with it – the name can be the same as back in the day.
The game won't start on a new Windows after all these years. Most often it helps to: run UT3.exe as administrator, enable compatibility mode (Windows 7) in the file properties, and have the older DirectX runtime and Visual C++ 2005/2008 packages installed. If the game crashes on first launch, try deleting the Documents\My Games\Unreal Tournament 3 folder – it will be recreated.
How do I open the console and how do I connect? The console opens with F10 (or tilde ~ depending on your keyboard). To connect, type open ut3.sk and press Enter. Set your name with setname your_name.
Is all of this free? The server, stats, stories and everything on this site is free and requires no registration. You only need your own copy of Unreal Tournament 3 – the game is no longer officially sold, so grab your original DVD/digital copy.
Does anyone actually play here? I don't want to run around an empty server. The server is never empty – you'll face our adaptive bots that adjust to your level: steamroll them and they toughen up, struggle and they ease off. You'll meet live players mostly in the evenings; the current status is in the site header and past games in the History section.
Why are there bots in my match and are they even fair? Bots fill up matches so there's always someone to play against. They use the same weapons and rules as you, no aimbot – their accuracy and aggression scale with your results. Each bot has its own style and personality.
Is my play tracked anywhere? Yes – the server logs every kill with position and weapon. After a match you'll find a complete detail page (charts, heatmaps, match replay), a player card with stats and achievements, leaderboards, records, and written chronicles for the best matches.
